Martin House Dragon Boat Race 2021
It was a bright and sunny day for the 14th year of the Dragon Boat Race at Roundhay Park in Leeds, on Sunday 26th September 2021, and the 5th year ICC have taken part. The ICC ‘Nauti Buoys & Gals’ were prepared for a competitive day of boat racing, the team included James M (Team Captain), Carl, Josh, Lauren, Dan, Rowan, Pog, James L, Arber, Jess (Drummer) and Tommy.
“We had a fantastic day. We really enjoyed being part of this annual event that we have been involved with over the years. It’s always a great family day out and we love the racing competition and team spirit of the day,” said James, Team Captain.
The event involved 34 teams, many in amazing fancy dress, with 3 rounds of 9 heats. The Nauti Buoys & Gals managed to win the first 3 races of each round, through sheer power, determination and team work. Almost capsizing in the 2nd race didn’t stop them from achieving a winning time! However, it did require a tactical change of shorts for Dan, to provide more grip on the boat seat! The team scored the quickest overall time in the first 3 races, out of 34 teams, making it through to the semi finals!
Jess said “The boat race was a great day out. As the drummer, I had the pleasure of looking over the whole team, beating the rhythm, whilst they rowed us from victory to victory. It was great to be involved in such a wonderful event, and all whilst raising money for charity.”
ICC had a good gazebo set-up with a spectacular BBQ for all the team and spectators to enjoy, thanks to the chefs Pog, Arber & Mikey and a big thank you to James L for doing the food run. All-in-all it was a very successful day, we made it through to the semi-finals AND we raised lots of money for Martin House.
Thank you to everyone who have supported us and the charity, we have managed to hit our target of raising £1,000! This fundraising will really make a difference to the children in Martin House children’s hospice care. This fantastic charity do such good work to support families with children who have life limiting conditions at their hospice and in the communities of North, West and East Yorkshire.
The Dragon Boat Race Challenge is a charity event in aid of Martin House which provides hospice care for children and young people.
